In August 2016, some Polytechnics in the country were accredited and upgraded to the Technical University Status, including Kumasi Technical University and around the same time, Mrs. Augustina Freeman who was the Head of the Counselling Unit was due for compulsory retirement.
There was therefore an urgent need to replace her during the 2016/2017 academic year, and as such, the University appointed Ms. Agnes Anim and Mrs. Diana Racheal Appiah Krofah who were then Senior Assistant Registrars to take charge of the Unit. They were granted study leave with pay to enrol into the University of Education, Winneba and University of Cape Coast respectively, to formalise the requirements of being Professional Counsellors. They worked diligently making the Unit a full place of comfort and relief.
In December 2020, the University appointed a Deputy Director, Ms. Felicia Ofosuaa Tettey, a Professional Counselling Psychologist, to be the Head of the Unit. Subsequently, Ms. Agnes Anim (a Senior Assistant Registrar) and Ms. Bertha Letsa (an Assistant Registrar) were redesignated as Senior Counselling Officer and Counselling Officer respectively and assigned to the Unit, while Rev. Paul Akwasi Amakwaah was appointed as an Assistant Counselling Officer to the Unit. Ms. Bertha Letsa was posted to Adako Jachie Campus as the full-time counsellor. An administrative staff was also employed in 2021 to handle administrative operations.
Through team efforts, the staff exhibited maximum professionalism, thereby lifting the image of the Unit per Statute 32 of the University statutes to the core.
