Guidance and Counselling Directorate, GNUTS, KsTU promote mental health awareness among staff and students

The Ghana National Union of Technical Students in collaboration with the Guidance and Counselling Directorate of Kumasi Technical University has organised a Mental Health Awareness Campaign to sensitise staff and students on the importance of mental health and overall wellbeing.

The campaign was part of the efforts to promote a supportive and healthy academic environment and to foster open conversations on mental health challenges and the need for timely intervention and support.

Facilitators discussed during the programme the importance of mental health as a key component of overall wellbeing and how it affects academic performance, workplace productivity, personal relationships and quality of life. Participants were encouraged to focus on their mental wellbeing and seek professional help whenever needed.

The awareness campaign addressed key mental health issues affecting students and staff including stress, anxiety, depression and emotional wellbeing, and the effect of academic, social and workplace pressures. Resource persons stressed the need for early detection of mental health challenges and the need for positive coping strategies to be put in place.

The participants were also taught practical ways to stay mentally healthy, including stress management, self-care, healthy lifestyle, social support and work-life balance. The sessions were also aimed at dispelling myths and reducing stigma that often surrounds mental health issues.

The Guidance and Counselling Directorate has reaffirmed its commitment to providing counselling and psychological support services to members of the University community, and has encouraged students and staff to make use of the available resources whenever they need help.

GNUTS representatives said raising awareness on mental health is crucial to building resilient individuals and a thriving educational community. They also encouraged participants to be advocates for mental health awareness and support in their department and social circles.

The campaign was a key platform for dialogue, education and advocacy, reinforcing the collective responsibility to promote mental wellness across the University.

This collaborative venture is another testament of the commitment of the Kumasi Technical University and Ghana National Union of Technical Students to create a healthy, inclusive and supportive environment where every member of the University community can thrive academically, professionally and personally.
